Brewer Adam Verstraete initially marketed a concept of ‘own-label beers’, i.e. beers that he brewed and distributed to several cafes with different labels (but which were often one and the same beer).
He dreamt, however, of his own brand. After 14 years of experimenting, he finally got there with the ‘Papegaei’. The name of the beer comes from the building at 13 Grote Dijk in Diksmuide that Adam purchased while developing the beer. According to old prints and paintings, there was a cafe called ‘De Papegaai’ on that site.
